rank 22 of 27 in the EU (2025)

How much the economy produces per person, measured in purchasing power: what that money can actually buy, at prices made comparable across the EU. Eurostat expresses this in PPS, a unit calibrated so that one PPS buys, on average across the EU, what one euro buys. The line has risen almost without interruption since the 1990s and keeps closing on the EU average (the dashed line): that closing gap is convergence itself.

Where Romania stands in the EU (2025)

Romania has climbed into the lower third of the ranking, above countries it could not be compared with two decades ago. The top needs careful reading: Luxembourg and Ireland are special cases, their GDP inflated by corporate headquarters rather than by residents' living standards.

Compared with Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria

The race with the neighbours says more than a rank. Romania started at Bulgaria's level, trailed Hungary and Poland for decades, and in recent years has caught up with Hungary. The gap to Poland remains, but the direction is clear.

The shaded band spans, year by year, the distance between the highest-value region and the lowest.

The national average hides a huge gap: Bucharest-Ilfov overtook the European average long ago, while the eastern and southern regions remain at roughly half of it. Convergence with Europe is, for now, largely the capital's convergence.
